The Government of Japan has pledged support for a major project to improve waste management and restore community facilities in Sri Lanka’s Central Province, which was severely affected by Cyclone Dithwa.
The Central Province, comprising the districts of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya, suffered extensive damage during the cyclone. Houses, roads, schools and health facilities were badly affected, while waste management systems collapsed under the impact of floods. Large volumes of debris and unmanaged waste accumulated across the region, creating serious public health and environmental concerns and disrupting essential services.
In response to these challenges, Japanese assistance is being extended to help restore and strengthen local services. A project focusing on sewage and sludge management is already underway with Japanese support.
Following a request from the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Japanese representatives were invited to study the post-disaster situation and explore ways to assist in recovery efforts. The first formal discussion on a new project proposal was held yesterday (13) at the Office of the Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government with the participation of relevant stakeholders.
The proposed initiative aims not only to restore disrupted services but also to reform existing systems and improve resilience to similar disasters in the future.
