A comprehensive development project funded by the Government of Japan is set to be launched in Sri Lanka’s Central Province to strengthen waste management and rebuild essential community infrastructure.
The project will be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) from May 2026 to October 2027, with financial assistance provided through the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka. It is expected to directly benefit approximately 340,000 people across the districts of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya.
One of the key components of the project is the improvement of solid waste collection systems. Plans include the procurement of 45 special electric three-wheelers designed to collect and transport recyclable materials, plastic, metal and electronic waste. These vehicles will be particularly useful in areas with narrow roads where conventional garbage trucks cannot operate, especially in flood-affected localities.
The project will also introduce simple digital tracking tools to monitor the movement of waste and improve coordination among local government authorities.
In addition, 15 large-scale community centres will be constructed or upgraded with solar panel systems and battery storage facilities to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during emergencies. Livelihood development programmes will also be implemented, with special focus on women and vulnerable groups.
Officials say the initiative will not only help restore normalcy after Cyclone Ditva but also contribute to building more sustainable and disaster-resilient communities in the Central Province.
