The President has extended heartfelt greetings to Tamil communities in Sri Lanka and abroad celebrating the Thai Pongal festival, emphasizing its deep cultural significance and its message of gratitude to nature and the dignity of labour.

In a special Thai Pongal message, the President described the festival as a proud tradition that highlights the inseparable bond between human life and nature. “This noble festivity manifests to the world the close relationship between humanity and the natural environment. We are all creations of nature, and there is no path we can take beyond or in defiance of it,” the message stated.

Highlighting the importance of expressing gratitude for nature’s blessings, the President noted that such appreciation represents one of the highest human virtues. He added that Thai Pongal serves as a reminder of the need to respect the environment and the efforts of those who work tirelessly to sustain society.

Referring to the country’s current situation, the President said Sri Lanka stands at a decisive turning point and that all citizens share a collective responsibility to guide the nation toward a “new era of revival.” He stressed that meaningful progress requires transformation in attitudes as well as policy and structural reforms.

“As a government, we have accepted this responsibility and embarked with determination on a new year dedicated to national advancement, even amidst numerous challenges,” the message further read.

Drawing on a traditional saying that “rice can be placed on our plates only if the farmer steps into the mud,” the President underscored the importance of hard work and commitment in achieving national prosperity. He compared the country’s present efforts to preparing fertile fields in anticipation of a bountiful harvest.

The President also called on all communities to use the spirit of Thai Pongal as a guiding light to nurture citizens enriched with cultural values. He urged Sri Lankans to resolve to build a new Sri Lanka founded on harmony, mutual respect, and the protection of religious and cultural rights.

Concluding his message, the President expressed hope that the aspirations of Tamil people celebrating Thai Pongal would be fulfilled and wished that the festival would usher in happiness and prosperity for all.
