In a move aimed at supporting government employees during major festive seasons, the Cabinet has approved increasing the festive advance from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000. The decision, included in the 2026 budget proposals, reflects the government’s effort to enhance employee welfare.

The festive advance, governed by the Establishments Code, is granted for occasions such as Thai Pongal, Ramadan, Sinhala and Tamil New Year, Vesak, Deepavali, Christmas, as well as religious pilgrimages including Sri Pada and Hajj.

Officials will recover the advance in eight monthly installments without interest, though early repayment is allowed. Circular instructions detailing the revised provisions are expected to be issued soon, enabling officers to access the increased benefits ahead of upcoming celebrations.
