The inaugural ceremony of the national programme ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ will be held tomorrow (13) at the Lotus Hall of the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo, under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The programme has been introduced to effectively coordinate and steer the country’s post-disaster recovery and rebuilding efforts.
The programme was launched in response to the urgent need for a highly coordinated national mechanism to address recovery and rehabilitation activities following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, which affected all parts of Sri Lanka, causing loss of life and extensive damage to private and public property.
Funding for the programme will be carried out through three strategic approaches: re-purposing ongoing development projects, re-allocating additional funds under the Public Finance Management Act—including a supplementary estimate of Rs. 500 billion for 2026—and mobilising domestic, foreign, public, and private donor support through the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Fund.
To provide strategic leadership, coordination, and oversight, President Dissanayake has established a Presidential Task Force comprising 25 members, including Ministers and senior officials, chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. The Task Force will guide key funding, recovery, and reconstruction decisions covering basic needs, infrastructure restoration, livelihood support, local economy revitalisation, and digital data systems.
Eight sub-committees will support the programme under the chairmanship of relevant line Ministers.
