Three individuals have been arrested for stealing three-wheelers, altering their chassis and engine numbers, changing their colours, and reselling them, police said.

The arrests were made by the Nugegoda Divisional Crime Investigation Unit following an investigation launched after a complaint was lodged by a resident of the Sri Jayewardenepura area, reporting the theft of his three-wheeler.

The suspects, aged between 28 and 43, are residents of the Anguruwella and Kuruwita areas.

Police have taken into custody 11 illegally modified three-wheelers found in the possession of the suspects. Investigations have revealed that the stolen vehicles originated from the Balangoda, Badulla, Battaramulla and Mirihana areas.

According to police, the modified three-wheelers were sold for prices ranging between Rs. 1.2 million and Rs. 1.3 million.

The suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (12).
