Senior Professor Shiroma M. Handunnetti, a renowned Sri Lankan scientist and immunologist, passed away on January 10, 2026.
She was a highly respected figure in the global scientific community, specifically known for her groundbreaking work in malaria and immunology. 

Key Contributions and Career

Malaria Research: She pioneered the first description of the rosetting phenomenon (cytoadherence), which was critical for understanding how malaria parasites interact with the human body.

Leadership at IBMBB: She served as the Director of the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IBMBB) at the University of Colombo from 2015 to 2021.

Chair Professor: At the time of her passing, she held the prestigious position of Chair Professor of Immunology.

Education: She spent over 35 years as an educator and researcher at the University of Colombo, mentoring a generation of Sri Lankan scientists.

Professional Leadership: She served as the President of the Allergy & Immunology Society of Sri Lanka (AISSL).
