The “Law for Overseas Employment” programme organised by the Legal Division of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) was held yesterday (11) at the Bureau’s Head Office in Battaramulla.
The programme was conducted to educate SLBFE investigation officers, officers attached to the Special Investigation Police Unit, and Bureau officials involved in providing evidence in cases related to foreign employment complaints, on laws governing the foreign employment sector.
With rapid advancements in computer and electronic technology, special emphasis was placed on educating officers on new trends in investigating complaints and consolidating evidence through the use of digital and electronic tools. The programme also focused on the use of computer-based and electronic evidence in implementing laws related to frauds in the foreign employment sector.
Participants were further briefed on the proper conduct of investigations under the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau Act No. 21 of 1985, which was amended in 1994 and 2009.
Senior Government Counsel Ishan Ratnapala, retired Chief Inspector of Police N. Yogeswaran, and Acting Manager (Legal) of the Bureau, Attorney-at-Law Rohan A. Wijesena, served as resource persons and delivered addresses at the programme.
Deputy General Manager (Legal) of the SLBFE, Attorney-at-Law Ms. Nelum Samarasekera, along with Bureau attorneys, officers of the Legal Division, Special Investigation Division, the Police Unit established within the Bureau, officers from SLBFE branch offices islandwide, and officials involved in providing evidence for legal proceedings, participated in the event.
