Matugama town became a focal point for two separate protests held yesterday (10), drawing attention to contrasting political issues.
One protest was organized by activists affiliated with the government, condemning alleged violence and harassment against women by opposition-linked groups. The demonstration was largely attended by women, with several female Members of Parliament representing the National People’s Power (NPP) government also participating.
Meanwhile, the Joint Opposition staged a separate protest in the town, voicing opposition to the government’s proposed education reforms. Protesters claimed that the reforms would undermine free education and negatively affect children.
The opposition-led protest was attended by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MPs Jagath Withana and Ajith P. Perera, Sarvajana Balaya leader Dilith Jayaweera, and several opposition activists, including former ministers Roshan Ranasinghe and Channa Jayasumana.
Both protests were conducted under police supervision, and no incidents were reported.
