President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said urgent education reforms are required to improve the quality of education in rural areas, pointing out that nearly 1,150 schools have fewer than 50 students.

He noted that such schools lack the resources to function effectively and said a new education system is needed to bring children together in well-equipped institutions that support both academic and extracurricular development.
