The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal was located about 100 km NorthEast of Trincomalee at 4am today (10 January 2026) The Department of Meteorology says that the deep depression currently over the southwest Bay of Bengal is moving northwestward and is very likely to cross the Sri Lankan coastline between Trincomalee and Jaffna today (10) between 11.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.

Cloudy skies will prevail over the northern half of the island, with intermittent rain or thundershowers expected in the Northern Province, as well as in the Anuradhapura and Trincomalee districts.

Some areas in the Northern Province may receive heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm.

Several spells of rain are also likely in the North Western, Central, Eastern and Uva Provinces, along with the Polonnaruwa district. Other areas may experience isolated showers or thundershowers during the evening or night.

Strong winds of 50–60 km/h, with gusts up to 70 km/h, are expected at times in the Northern and North-Central Provinces and in the Trincomalee district. Meanwhile, fairly strong winds of 40–50 km/h may occur in the North Western, Central, Uva and Western Provinces.

The public is kindly advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
