Six spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir have been opened due to continuous heavy rainfall in the catchment areas and the release of water from the Kala Oya Reservoir.
According to reports, four spill gates have been opened by four feet each, while two others have been opened by two feet. The Irrigation Engineer in charge stated that approximately 50,176 cubic feet of water per second is being released into the Kala Oya.
Meanwhile, spill gates of the Kantale Reservoir have also been opened. The Irrigation Department said that four out of ten spill gates have been opened by one foot each due to adverse weather conditions.
In addition, three spill gates of the Alikota Ara Reservoir have been opened by one foot each. As a result, water flowing into the Kirindi Oya has caused a rise in its water level.
Authorities have urged residents in downstream areas to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions.
