A special meeting was held on the 8th at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism between Minister Vijitha Herath and internationally renowned judo player Adam Yandiyev to discuss avenues for promoting sports tourism in Sri Lanka.
During the discussions, Adam Yandiyev, founder of the world-renowned Salam Cup martial arts tournament held in the United Arab Emirates, expressed his willingness to organize an exhibition tournament in Colombo in parallel with the main Salam Cup event. The proposal aims to showcase Sri Lanka as a potential destination for international sporting events.
The Salam Cup attracts athletes from around 160 countries and features competitions across 13 categories. The tournament has gained significant global attention, with participation from celebrated athletes as well as personalities from the international film industry.
Mr. Yandiyev emphasized that hosting part of the tournament in Sri Lanka would greatly contribute to the promotion of sports tourism and provide an important platform to elevate the country’s profile in the global sports arena.
The discussion was attended by Minister Vijitha Herath and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Federation, Dheera Hettiarachchi, highlighting the government’s interest in leveraging international sporting events to boost tourism and international recognition.
