President Anura Kumara Dissanayake attended the inaugural ceremony today (09) under the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ initiative for the programme providing compensation and constructing new homes for families whose houses were completely destroyed by disasters, held at Malbeligala village in the Alubedda Grama Niladhari Division, Galnewa Divisional Secretariat.

Deeply pleased that the PROJECT 5M housing programme, the flagship initiative under ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’, aimed at restoring lives, was able to be launched promptly.

Accordingly, in the Galnewa, Palagala, Palugaswewa, Ipalogama and Thirappane Divisional Secretariat areas of Anuradhapura District, compensation was awarded for 26 completely damaged houses that were certified as being capable of being rebuilt on the same site, and work on a new house was commenced.

Including housing programmes for low-income families, the Malayagam community and those displaced by war, the full implementation of this initiative is expected to make 2026 the year in Sri Lanka’s history with the highest number of homes built under government support.
