The Ministry of Transport has warned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals who operate vehicles under the influence of alcohol or narcotic substances.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday (8), Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake said that drivers found using drugs would now face legal measures that were previously difficult to enforce due to the absence of proper regulations.

The Minister stated that the Ministry has introduced mobile laboratories capable of detecting up to 12 types of narcotic substances within three to four minutes.

“These tests can provide on-the-spot results, which can be printed and issued directly to the driver,” he added.

Minister Rathnayake emphasized that this new system will strengthen road safety enforcement and help prevent accidents caused by impaired driving
