Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala, attended the event as the Chief Guest. The initiative has been introduced by the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL) in collaboration with affiliated insurance companies, with the objective of aligning the insurance industry with national digital transformation goals.
Under this new system, the traditional physical and plastic motor insurance cards will be replaced with a digital version. This enables policyholders to securely access their motor insurance details anytime and anywhere through their smartphones, enhancing convenience, transparency, and efficiency.
The program is also aligned with the government’s digital economy objectives and contributes to national sustainable development goals by significantly reducing plastic usage, minimizing waste, and promoting green policies. Additionally, it aims to simplify complex administrative and distribution processes associated with motor insurance documentation.
To ensure the effective implementation, monitoring, and enforcement of the digital insurance system, the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka and insurance companies jointly donated 500 tablet devices to the Sri Lanka Police Department. These devices will allow police officers to instantly and accurately verify insurance details through the centralized insurance database during inspections and operations.
The launch of the National Digital Motor Insurance Card is expected to enhance regulatory efficiency, strengthen road safety enforcement, and support Sri Lanka’s transition towards a fully digital public service ecosystem.
