As of last night, the system was centered about 490 kilometres southeast of Pottuvil. It is expected to move west-northwestwards and approach the eastern coast of the island during the next 24 hours.
Cloudy skies are expected over most parts of the country. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, Central and Southern provinces. Showers or thundershowers may also occur at several places in other areas of the island after 1.00 p.m.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some places in the Eastern and Uva provinces, while fairly heavy falls of about 50–75 mm can be expected in other parts of the island.
Strong winds of around 50–60 kmph are expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Eastern provinces, and in the Hambantota, Gampaha, Colombo and Monaragala districts.
The Meteorology Department has urged the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
