SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa on Tuesday stressed the need for stronger South Asian regional cooperation, saying India’s leadership is crucial to countering extremism and ensuring long-term regional stability.
In a post on social media platform X, Rajapaksa pointed to a series of global and regional security developments, noting that countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka have experienced periods of political instability in recent years. He observed that public unrest and changes in government in these nations have, at times, been encouraged by extremist elements.
Rajapaksa stressed that addressing these challenges requires a collective regional commitment to counter extremism, prevent political violence, and safeguard minority rights. According to him, greater regional coherence is essential for South Asia to withstand emerging crises and respond effectively to shared security concerns.
Emphasizing India’s leadership role, Rajapaksa said New Delhi remains pivotal to ensuring long-term peace and stability across South Asia. He added that with aligned goals centered on growth and stability, the region could enhance its international influence through unity and cooperation.
The Sri Lankan MP also referred to the upcoming elections in Bangladesh and Nepal, describing them as a hopeful opportunity to reaffirm democratic legitimacy through free and fair electoral processes, which he said would further contribute to strengthening regional security.
