The Department of Meteorology says that the low-pressure system currently positioned over the Bay of Bengal, to the southeast of Sri Lanka, was centered about 570 km southeast of Pottuvil at around 5.30 p.m. today (07), near latitude 5.0°N and longitude 86.8°E.
According to the department, the system is expected to move west-northwestwards and approach the eastern coast of the island within the next 36 hours.
Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the deep and shallow sea areas around the island until further notice from today (08th January).
