The District Disaster Management Centre said vehicular traffic along the Polonnaruwa–Sungawila–Somawathiya road has been closed since the morning due to flooding caused by the overflow of the Manampitiya Mahaweli River in the Somawathiya area.
The Disaster Management Office said the Somawathiya sacred site has not been significantly affected by the flooding.
Meanwhile, Pulastigama Police said the Sungawila–Somawathiya road leading to the sacred site has been completely closed as water levels along the route have risen to about two feet.
Authorities said the road has been inundated following intermittent rainfall in the Polonnaruwa District.
