Modern food and beverage dept opened at Maharagama Apeksha hospital

A fully equipped, modern Food and Beverage Department capable of preparing meals for up to 2,000 people at a time was officially opened at the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital, alongside the launch of the pilot project titled “Feed the Patient,” aimed at providing customized, nutritious, and high-quality meals to in-house patients.

The new facility was constructed with financial contributions from several donors, including the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya, Lady J Foundation, Hirdaramani Group, Grand Monarch Hotel, Sumanadisi Group, Norlanka Manufacturing Company, and other benefactors.

The project was completed with the labour contribution of the Sri Lanka Army Engineer Services Regiment. Hospital staff have also received specialized training in modern food preparation and serving methods.

The “Feed the Patient” initiative is a pilot program designed to provide government hospital in-patients with nutritious and appetizing meals served on specially designed plates, where rice, fish, and curries are kept separately, allowing for patient-specific (customized) meals that meet dietary and medical requirements.

The program is implemented by the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, with the collaboration of the Sri Lanka College of Nutrition Physicians and the Sri Lanka Association of Nutrition Physicians. On this occasion, several nutrition guidelines developed by the Sri Lanka Association of Nutrition Physicians were also officially unveiled.

The event was attended by members of the Maha Sangha, Deputy Minister of Health Hansaka Wijemuni, Member of Parliament Devananda Suraveera, Maharagama Urban Council Chairman Saman Samarakoon, Basnayake Nilame of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya Thilina Madusanka, former Basnayake Nilame Dishan Gunasekara, Director of the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital Dr. Aruna Jayasekara, Deputy Director A.I. Kulakulasuriya, President of the Sri Lanka Association of Nutrition Physicians Specialist Dr. Jayani Tennakoon, Hospital Committee Chairman Binara Jayawardena, as well as donors, specialist doctors, medical officers, nurses, and other healthcare staff.
