President Anura Kumara Dissanayake first declared a state of emergency across the country on December 1, 2025, in response to the disaster situation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. The move was aimed at ensuring public security, maintaining law and order, and guaranteeing the uninterrupted supply of essential services to the public.
Subsequently, the President issued an Extraordinary Gazette extending the emergency regulations for an additional month. The gazette was presented to Parliament today for approval.
A two-hour debate followed, during which members from both the government and the opposition expressed their views on the extension. Following the debate, the notification was formally approved without a division.
