Sri Lanka received a record USD 7.8 billion in migrant worker remittances in 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism confirmed today.
Minister Vijitha Herath said that nearly 312,000 Sri Lankans secured overseas employment during the year, with monthly remittances averaging USD 650–700 million. Combined with tourism earnings, these inflows contributed approximately USD 11 billion to the national economy.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment, Arun Hemachandra, highlighted reforms to prevent political interference in foreign employment processes and ensure equitable access to overseas opportunities. A special police unit was established in 2025 to address employment fraud and expedite investigations.
