An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the Nuwara Eliya ASP Office and a female police sergeant serving at the Kalmunai ASP Office have been arrested in connection with a bribery investigation.

The arrests were made following an inquiry conducted by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), based on a tip-off received by the Commission.

According to CIABOC, the ASP attached to the Nuwara Eliya ASP Office was arrested at around 10.50 a.m. today (05) on charges of demanding a bribe amounting to Rs. 72,000, including a mobile phone, on several occasions. The bribe was allegedly demanded from an unmarried police constable attached to the Wellavelli Police, in return for obtaining permission from the Batticaloa Divisional Superintendent of Police to work from home.

Meanwhile, a female police sergeant attached to the Kalmunai ASP Office was arrested at around 3.00 p.m. today at the same office. She is accused of accepting a mobile phone and other items as bribes in connection with the same investigation.

The suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court and the Kalmunai Magistrate’s Court respectively.
