Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya said disciplinary action has been taken against around 500 police officers in connection with drug-related offences.
The IGP stated that steps have also been taken to remove a number of police officers found to be involved in drug offences from the police service.
He made these remarks while addressing the graduation ceremony of newly recruited police officers held at the Sri Lanka Police College grounds in Anuradhapura.
Speaking at the same event, Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala said the government has launched several programmes aimed at eradicating the underworld, organized crime and drug menace from the country.
