The General Secretary of the Graded Principals’ Association, Nimal Mudunkotuwa, has raised concerns that despite the commencement of the 2026 academic year today (05), the government has yet to introduce a formal educational plan for Grade 6 students.
He said authorities have scheduled the official start of the Grade 6 curriculum for January 21, leaving a gap of several weeks without academic activities, a situation that has placed teachers and school principals in a difficult position.
Mudunkotuwa also pointed out that the government usually issues several essential documents to schools on the first day of the academic year. However, he noted that for the first time in recent history, schools have not received student registry books required to formally begin the new school year.
He warned that the delays and lack of clear planning could disrupt school administration and negatively affect students’ education at the start of the academic year.
