Health experts have warned that increased screen-based activities among children are contributing to a growing deficiency of vitamin D, raising concerns about long-term health impacts.

Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera said children are spending more time indoors using mobile phones, tablets and other digital devices, often missing out on early morning sunlight, which is essential for natural vitamin D production.

He explained that reduced exposure to morning sunlight not only affects vitamin D absorption but also limits opportunities for physical activity, both of which are vital for healthy growth and development.

Dr. Perera cautioned that inadequate vitamin D levels could weaken children’s immune systems, making them more susceptible to illnesses and infections.

He called on parents to actively encourage children to engage in outdoor activities during the early hours of the day and to limit screen time in order to promote healthier lifestyles and safeguard children’s overall well-being.
