The former Aussie Test cricketer was transported to a Brisbane hospital from his Gold Coast Home after becoming unwell and lying down to rest on Boxing Day.
The 54-year-old was placed in an induced coma in hospital after being diagnosed with meningitis.
On Sunday, Gilchrist stated Martyn’s recovery had come on in leaps and bounds with his family describing it as a “miracle”.
“He is now able to talk and respond to treatment,’’ Gilchrist said to Code Sports.
“He has responded extraordinarily well since coming out (of the coma) to the point where his family feels it’s like some sort of miracle.
“It has been so positive that they’re hopeful he will be able to move out of the ICU into another part of the hospital which is representative of what a great recovery it’s been and how quickly it has flipped around.’’
News of the meningitis diagnosis shocked the cricket community with players and fans from around the globe sending thoughts and prayers to the 67 Test star.
Meningitis is a serious inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain the brain and spinal cord which can lead to serious complications including death.
Gilchrist said he has been in constant communication with the family who are overwhelmed with the love they’ve received from the community.
“On behalf of his family, Amanda his partner, thank you to everyone for the heartfelt love and wishes and care for Damien as he’s gone through and continues to go through a challenging time,” Gilchrist said.
