The Police Department has issued a special public advisory urging citizens to remain vigilant amid growing economic difficulties, calling on school teachers, students, parents and the general public to take extra precautions to ensure personal safety.
In a statement, police noted that many people across cities and villages are facing financial stress due to income shortages, job losses and business disruptions, which has led to an increase in unexpected and potentially dangerous situations.
Police advised the public to avoid wearing expensive watches, gold jewellery and other valuables, and to limit the use of mobile phones in public places. Citizens were also urged not to carry large amounts of cash, to keep ATM and credit cards secure, and to be cautious when traveling, especially at night.
The advisory stressed the importance of personal safety, including avoiding lonely streets and alleys, using main roads, staying alert to surroundings, and keeping emergency contact numbers readily available. People were also warned not to allow strangers into their vehicles and to immediately lock vehicle doors after entering.
Parents were urged to ensure children return home early and to maintain regular contact with family members. The police also cautioned the public to be careful when answering doorbells and to maintain a safe distance from others, noting that identifying individuals has become more difficult as many people wear masks.
Those using hired or ride-hailing cab services were advised to inform family members of their travel details, while the public was encouraged to use public transport where possible and avoid crowded buses.
Police further advised limiting outings to essential needs between 6.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m., avoiding prolonged stays in shopping malls, beaches and parks, and exercising caution in Colombo and surrounding areas by immediately reporting suspicious individuals soliciting money to the police.
The Police Department urged the public to follow these guidelines for at least the next three months or until the situation improves, and called on relevant authorities to issue similar advisories in their respective areas in the interest of public safety.
