Sri Lanka Customs officers have arrested a female employee of a private airline for attempting to smuggle gold jewellery and gold biscuits valued at over Rs. 40 million into the country.

According to Customs, the suspect had concealed the gold items inside her travel bag and attempted to exit through the crew arrival gate at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). She was apprehended during an inspection while trying to leave the restricted area designated for airline crew members.

Customs officials said that a total of 1 kilogram and 163 grams of gold jewellery and gold biscuits were recovered from her luggage.

The arrested suspect is a 27-year-old woman residing in the Colombo area. Further investigations are being carried out by Airport Customs in connection with the incident.
