The New Rice Festival (Aluth Sahal Mangallaya), the first of the four major annual festivals of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, was held today (January 3) in Kandy, coinciding with the Duruthu Full Moon Poya Day.

In keeping with centuries-old tradition, alms prepared using newly harvested rice were offered to the Sacred Tooth Relic during religious observances held this morning at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The ritual symbolizes gratitude for the harvest and seeks blessings for prosperity and well-being in the year ahead.

The Aluth Sahal Mangallaya is one of the most significant ceremonies associated with the Sri Dalada Maligawa, reflecting the deep connection between Buddhism, agriculture, and cultural heritage in Sri Lanka. Devotees and temple officials participated in the observances, which were conducted in line with ancient customs preserved over generations.
