A programme to install 400 surveillance cameras across Colombo is currently being implemented to enhance traffic management and public security.
Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic and Road Safety stated that monitoring activities are already underway in the city using 75 fixed cameras and two camera-equipped surveillance vans.
The cameras have been installed to control traffic congestion and improve road safety in Colombo. Under the existing system, drivers who commit traffic violations are identified through camera footage, and legal action is taken against the offenders.
The Deputy Inspector General further noted that several modern, advanced-technology cameras will be added to the system in the near future.
He emphasized that this initiative will enable systematic traffic management, strengthen security within the city, and ensure efficient identification of traffic offenders and enforcement of the law.
