Professor Jayaratne stated that favourable sky conditions could allow the public to observe the meteor activity with the naked eye, especially from areas with minimal light pollution. The best viewing time is expected to be after midnight and during the early morning hours.
He explained that meteor showers occur when the Earth passes through streams of debris left behind by comets, causing small particles to burn up in the atmosphere and appear as streaks of light across the sky.
The public has been advised to choose open areas away from city lights and to allow time for their eyes to adjust to the darkness for better viewing. No special equipment is required to observe the phenomenon.
