Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra says that 2025 will be recorded in history as the year Sri Lanka received the highest amount of foreign remittances to date.
Speaking at an official event, the Deputy Minister stated that foreign remittances exceeding USD 7.8 billion were received during the year, marking a significant milestone for the country’s economy.
The remarks were made at the opening ceremony of the modernized 24-hour Call Center of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), which was inaugurated under his patronage. The upgraded call center aims to provide a more efficient and reliable service to migrant workers and their families.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Minister Hemachandra further announced that within a week, facilities will be introduced to allow complaints to be submitted via WhatsApp, in addition to existing channels, enhancing accessibility for overseas workers.
He also pointed out that the politicization of the foreign employment sector in recent years had caused damage to Sri Lanka’s foreign job market, emphasizing the need for transparent and worker-friendly reforms to restore confidence and strengthen the sector.
The Deputy Minister highlighted that these new initiatives are part of broader efforts to protect migrant workers’ rights and to ensure the sustainability of foreign employment as a key contributor to the national economy.
