The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) must continue to serve not only as the guardian of the nation’s airspace but also as a key contributor to national development, Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe emphasized during the First Working Day programme at SLAF Headquarters on January 1, 2026.
The event, held under the Commander’s patronage, was attended by members of the Air Force Board of Management, officers, other ranks, and civilian staff.
The programme began with two minutes of silence to honour heroes who made the supreme sacrifice in defence of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation, followed by the reading of the Government Service Pledge by the Commander.
In his New Year’s Address, which was live streamed to all SLAF establishments island-wide, Air Marshal Edirisinghe extended warm wishes to all SLAF personnel and their families as the Service prepares to celebrate its 75th Anniversary this year, marking a historic milestone since its establishment in 1951.
Paying tribute to the visionary leaders and pioneers who laid the foundation of the Air Force, the Commander also remembered with deep respect all personnel who sacrificed their lives for the nation and expressed gratitude to their families for their unwavering support.
Reflecting on the past year, he commended SLAF personnel for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication, highlighting the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations conducted during Cyclone “Ditwa.” The efforts of the Air Force, in coordination with civil authorities, were widely recognized locally and internationally.
The Commander called on personnel to enhance technological capabilities and develop human resources, describing them as the Air Force’s most valuable asset. He noted that the induction of new aircraft last year, and the planned induction of TH-57 (Bell-206 military version) helicopters, would strengthen operational readiness and pilot training.
Special New Year wishes were extended to members of the SLAF Peacekeeping Contingent serving overseas, particularly in the Central African Republic.
The ceremony also featured the unveiling of the official 75th Anniversary SLAF logo by the Commander, and cash prizes were awarded to the designers of the SLAF 75th Anniversary logo and the commemorative stamp.
