The sacred ritual, which involves offering the first harvest of the New Year to the Sacred Tooth Relic, is traditionally held every year on the Duruthu Full Moon Poya Day. The ceremony takes place under the patronage of the Chief Prelate in charge of the Dalada Thevava and the Diyawadana Nilame.
In addition to the New Rice Offering Ceremony, the Sri Dalada Maligawa annually conducts four major sacred ceremonies, known as the Sathara Maha Mangallaya. These include the Aluth Sahal Mangallaya, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year rituals, the Esala Perahera, and the Karthika Festival, all of which hold deep religious and cultural significance for Buddhists across the country.
