Showery conditions are expected to intensify in the Eastern, Northern and Uva provinces during the coming days due to the development of a low-level atmospheric disturbance to the east of Sri Lanka, the Department of Meteorology said.

Showers will occur at times in the Eastern, Central, North-Central and Uva provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some places in the Central and Uva provinces and in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts.

The Northern Province is expected to experience several spells of showers, while showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in other parts of the island after 2.00 p.m. Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely in these areas.

A few showers may also occur in coastal areas of the North-Western and Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts. Misty conditions can be expected in some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts during the early morning hours.

The general public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Sea Areas Around the Island

According to the marine weather forecast for the next 24 hours, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Batticaloa. Showers may occur at a few places in other sea areas around the island.

Winds will be northerly to north-easterly with speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 50 kmph at times in sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Hambantota via Colombo, Puttalam, Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa.

The sea in these areas is expected to be fairly rough at times, while other sea areas around the island will be moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

Fishermen and naval communities are advised to remain vigilant and follow weather advisories issued by the authorities.
