The Ministry of Education began the New Year 2026 by donating a portion of staff salaries to the Disaster Relief Fund to assist communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah.
A special programme was held today at the Ministry premises to mark the start of the new year and seek blessings for the Ministry’s planned activities. During the event, a two-minute silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives in the cyclone and members of the tri-services who died during humanitarian operations.
As part of the initiative, staff officers donated two days’ salary, while other employees contributed one day’s salary to the government fund supporting relief efforts for affected communities.
Speaking at the event, Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Deputy Minister Dr. Madura Seneviratne, and Secretary to the Ministry Nalaka Kaluwewa addressed the staff, extending New Year greetings and highlighting the importance of collective effort in achieving the Ministry’s future plans.
The programme was attended by all staff, including Additional Secretaries, staff officers, and religious leaders who participated in the ceremonies.
