Police have arrested two suspects involved in a hit-and-run incident that killed a police constable and injured a Civil Security Force officer in Ambalantota town.

The deceased officer, Police Constable Sarath of Ambalantota Police, was on patrol duty when the incident occurred near the Girihadhu temple earlier today. The injured officer, identified as Civil Defense Force officer Dissanayake, is receiving treatment at Ambalantota Hospital.

According to police, the officers had signaled a suspicious white car traveling from Tangalle towards Kataragama to stop. The vehicle fled the scene, striking the constable and the civil defense officer. The suspects abandoned the car after the accident.

One suspect was arrested shortly afterward, while the driver surrendered to police through a lawyer this morning. Investigations revealed that the driver and passenger were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Police said that further legal action will be taken against the suspects.
