The second reading of the 2026 budget of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), which is governed by the National People’s Power (NPP), was passed today by a slim majority of two votes.

A total of 58 councillors voted in favour of the budget, while 56 voted against it.

The inaugural 2026 budget of the CMC was first presented to the council on December 22, but was defeated at the time, receiving 60 votes against and only 57 votes in favour.

Against this backdrop, the budget was re-presented to the council today by Mayor Mrs. Kelly Balthazar. Following the second vote, the budget was approved by a majority, securing its passage at the second reading.
