Two generators at the Lakvijaya (Norochcholai) Coal-fired Power Plant are expected to be reconnected to the national power grid by mid-January 2026, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said.
Generator No. 2 was taken out of service on November 3, 2025, for scheduled ‘B’ level maintenance, which is carried out once every three years. The maintenance work, undertaken with the participation of both local and foreign technical teams, is now in its final stages. The generator is scheduled to be connected to the national grid around January 14, 2026, following the completion of condition inspections.
In addition, Generator No. 1 was safely shut down on December 20, 2025, after a sudden boiler failure. The CEB said urgent repair work is currently underway and the generator is expected to be restored and reconnected to the grid by around January 18, 2026.
The Ceylon Electricity Board assured that the temporary shutdown of the two generators will not affect the uninterrupted supply of electricity to consumers.
