Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation K.D. Lalkantha inspected the Mahaberiyatenna National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) farm in the Digana area, as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen and modernise the livestock sector.
The government has given special attention to improving different areas of the livestock industry, with the development of NLDB farms identified as a key priority. During the visit, the Minister reviewed the facilities and discussed ways to improve productivity and efficiency at the farm.
The Mahaberiyatenna NLDB farm also operates a sales outlet for NLDB products and a coffee shop aimed at foreign tourists. The initiative is intended to promote a coffee variety unique to Sri Lanka on the global stage. The Minister discussed with officials the steps needed to further improve these products and attract more tourists to the area.
Minister Lalkantha also inspected the sheep pens at the farm following the impact of Cyclone Ditvah. Officials confirmed that no animals were harmed despite the severe weather conditions. Discussions were held on increasing the number of animals, improving farm income and expanding operations.
The Minister instructed officials to discuss their requirements and inform the Ministry about the need for new recruitments and financial support, assuring that necessary funds would be provided by the government to support the expansion plans.
