Sri Lanka Police have recorded a sharp increase in road accidents and fatalities this year, prompting authorities to introduce stricter enforcement measures, Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic Control and Highway Safety, W. G. J. Senadheera, said yesterday (29).
Addressing the media, DIG Senadheera said road accidents have risen by 271 cases compared to last year, while the number of deaths has increased by 317. He noted that although serious accidents have generally declined, minor accidents have shown a slight increase.
Studies of daily fatal accidents reveal that pedestrians are the most vulnerable group, accounting for 31% of annual road accident victims. Motorcyclists, pillion riders and three-wheeler drivers are also among those most frequently affected.
DIG Senadheera attributed the rise in accidents mainly to the use of alcohol and drugs, as well as driver negligence and lack of attention.
