The email—sent from a foreign country to Divisional Secretary Ms. Ramya Jayasundara—stated that a bomb would explode at 2.00 p.m. today. Acting swiftly, the Divisional Secretary evacuated all staff and visitors from the premises and informed the security forces.
The storage room and the entire Divisional Secretariat premises were subsequently inspected by the Nawalapitiya Police, the Police Special Task Force (STF), the Army Bomb Disposal Unit, and the Police Dog Unit. After nearly four hours of thorough inspections, authorities confirmed that no suspicious items were found.
Kandy District MP Thushari Jayasinghe, who arrived at the scene following the incident, stated that the search operation was carried out based on the threatening email received by the Divisional Secretariat.
Meanwhile, the Poojapitiya Police said investigations revealed that a similar email received by the Poojapitiya Divisional Secretariat on the same day, claiming a terrorist attack, was also fake. However, a senior police officer noted that special police security has been deployed at the Pasbage Korala Divisional Secretariat as a precautionary measure.
Police further revealed that the Divisional Secretariat had received another email yesterday (28) warning of a possible terrorist attack and advising staff to vacate the premises before 2.00 p.m. today. As the previous day was a holiday, the email was only noticed today by an officer.
Following a complaint lodged with the police on the instructions of the Divisional Secretary, immediate security measures were taken, including the evacuation of staff and the deployment of special police units. Investigations into the origin of the hoax emails are ongoing.
