Latha Walpola, who passed away on the night of 27 December at the age of 92, is remembered as one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic voices. Born in Mount Lavinia in 1934, she made her debut on Radio Ceylon at the tender age of 12 in 1946.
Over her illustrious career, Latha Walpola recorded more than 10,000 songs, including several in foreign languages, earning her the enduring title of the “Queen of Songs” in Sri Lankan cinema.
Her passing marks the end of an era in Sri Lankan music, with fans and fellow artists set to pay their last respects to the legendary songstress.
