Renowned Sri Lankan songstress Kala Suri Latha Walpola, fondly hailed as the “Kokilavi of Helaya” and celebrated as the eternal “Queen of Song” in Sinhala cinema, passed away today (15). She was 91 years old at the time of her demise.

Born in 1934 in Mount Lavinia, Latha Walpola began her extraordinary musical journey at a very young age. At just 12 years old, she made her first radio performance in 1946 on the then Radio Ceylon, marking the beginning of a legendary career in Sri Lankan music.

Over the decades, she lent her voice to more than 10,000 songs, including performances in several foreign languages, earning admiration both locally and internationally.

Her contribution to Sinhala cinema remains unparalleled. She made her cinematic debut in 1953 with the film “Eda Re” and went on to provide playback singing for over 600 films during her illustrious career spanning several decades.

Latha Walpola’s powerful yet graceful voice, dedication to the arts, and immense contribution to Sri Lankan music and cinema have left an indelible mark on the nation’s cultural heritage. Her passing marks the end of a golden era in Sinhala music, but her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
