Sri Lankan police have recovered 133 mobile phones and several other prohibited items during a series of search operations carried out at the Boossa High-Security Prison.

Police said the seizures were made during 72 search operations conducted between January 1 and December 26, 2025. Items recovered included 159 SIM cards, 110 mobile phone chargers, 122 data cables, 56 hands-free devices, 12 mobile phone batteries, three knives, 2.85 grams of heroin and 40.012 grams of tobacco, in addition to the mobile phones.

The most recent operation took place on December 24, when officers from the Special Task Force, along with prison emergency response and security units, conducted a special search of prison cells and surrounding areas.

During the operation, cells in Section A of the special unit were searched, leading to the recovery of two smartphones, chargers, data cables, adapters, wire pieces and tobacco-related items.

Police said all seized items have been handed over to prison authorities for further investigations, adding that intensified inspections are continuing at the Boossa High-Security Prison to curb the smuggling and use of prohibited items inside the facility.
