He was taken into custody yesterday (26) following an investigation carried out by the Homicide Investigation Division of the CID.
The arrest is linked to an inquiry into a firearm that had been issued to Mr. Devananda by the Sri Lanka Army for his personal use in 2001. The weapon was recovered in 2019 during the interrogation of organized criminal Makandure Madush.
Police investigations revealed that the serial number of the recovered firearm matched that of the weapon issued to the former Minister.
During questioning, Mr. Devananda reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding how the firearm went missing. As a result, he was arrested yesterday, and further investigations are currently underway.
