The van driver and a woman who were injured in the accident were admitted to the Habarana Hospital for treatment.
According to Kaudulla Wildlife Officers, the elephant had been crossing the main road from the Kaudulla National Park towards the Hurulu Ecological Park at the time of the collision.
The deceased wild elephant is estimated to be about 12 years old and approximately five feet in height.
Kaudulla Wildlife Officers, together with the Hatharas Fort Police, are conducting investigations into the incident.
