A member of the National People's Power (NPP) representing the Puttalam Pradeshiya Sabha was arrested by the Mundalama Police this morning (26) in connection with an incident involving the verbal harassment of a Grama Niladhari.

Police said the suspect is an elected member of the Puttalam Pradeshiya Sabha from the Mangala Eliya division. The arrest was made following a complaint lodged by the concerned Grama Niladhari.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred on the 5th while the Grama Niladhari was traveling on her motorcycle on disaster-related duties. She reportedly collided with a small lorry in which the Pradeshiya Sabha member was traveling, after which the member allegedly verbally abused her.

The Grama Niladhari further stated that she informed the Mundalama Divisional Secretary regarding the incident. She has also alleged that the member verbally abused her again over the telephone following a disaster committee meeting held on the 8th.

Police said the suspect appeared at the Mundalama Police Station this morning in response to a summons issued over the complaint, after which he was taken into custody.

The arrested member is scheduled to be produced before the Puttalam Magistrate’s Court.
